چکیده
The reduction of spinal fractures requires a combination of aith and reason. Faith is needed, as the goal of the 20th cenury orthopaedic surgeon is to restore full integrity to the patient. aith must be combined with reason, to ensure that the reduction rocedure is safe for the spinal cord and nerve roots. Reducion should be followed by stable fixation. When the indications re determined with discernment and the procedure conducted ethodically, surgery, an aggressive act that should always be mitgated by experience, now allows the reduction and stabilisation f spinal dislocations and, in the event of neurological comproise, ensures that the patient is in the best possible conditions for ecovery.

Unconventional fixation of thoracolumbar fractures using round hole bone plates and transpedicular screws.
BACKGROUND In an attempt to contain the high cost of commercially available pedicle screw systems, several authors have used unconventional alternatives such as locally made plates or dynamic compression plates (DCP) along with cancellous screws for transpedicular fixation of the thoracolumbar spine. These plates, however, allow for a wide range of motion at the plate-screw interphase and the c...
متن کاملMultiple lumbar vertebral fractures following a single idiopathic seizure in an otherwise healthy patient a case report
It has been reported that fractures are more common in epileptic patients relative to the general population. Seizures by repeated muscular contractions can increase fracture risk throughout the skeleton, but the reported papers about non traumatic vertebral fractures following a single episode of seizure are rare and mostly located in thoracic spine with only one or two vertebral fr...
متن کاملA Combined Bony and Soft Tissue, Thoracic Chance Fracture: Late Displacement following Conservative Treatment
We report the first case of a combined bony and soft tissue Chance fracture in the thoracic spine, with late presenting displacement following conservative management. Chance fractures are flexion-distraction injuries to the spine. They consist of disruption and longitudinal separation of the posterior elements of the vertebra, with the fracture extending through the pedicles and into the verte...
متن کاملThe Pedicles Are Not the Densest Regions of the Lumbar Vertebrae: Implications for Bone Quality Assessment and Surgical Treatment Strategy
STUDY DESIGN Cadaver study. OBJECTIVE To determine the bone density of lumbar vertebral anatomic subregions. Bone mineral density (BMD) is a major factor in osseous fixation construct strength. The standard region for implant fixation of the spine is the pedicle; however, other regions may be more viable options with higher bone quality. METHODS Using computed tomography images, the spine w...
